James II of Aragon held Catalonia as a constituent principality within a broader Crown of Aragon that also encompassed Valencia, Majorca, and — for a time — Sicily. The denier issues attributed to his Catalan authority were struck under the monetary system he inherited from his father Peter III, a billon coinage designed as much for political continuity as for trade. James was simultaneously negotiating the Treaty of Anagni in 1295, surrendering Sicily to resolve a papal interdict that had burdened the Crown for over a decade.
Cru#340 places this squarely in the Barcelona mint tradition of low-silver billon that dominated small commercial transactions across the principality throughout the thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries.
