The three surrounding lobes contain, respectively, the Austrian bound or banded shield, the Moravian chequered eagle, and the Bohemian lion passant, each rotated within its lobe. The overall composition reflects the dynastic claims asserted during the Hungarian interregnum of 1439–1440. The design is executed in the hammered tradition with irregular striking pressure. |

The interregnum following Albert II's death in October 1439 left Hungary without a functioning royal administration for months, as factions clashed over whether to crown Władysław III of Poland or support the claim of Albert's posthumous son Ladislaus. Coinage continued under the authority of the royal treasury, but without a reigning monarch to name — hence the anonymous issue. The dispute was not resolved until 1440, and even then the rival coronations of both claimants produced years of civil conflict.
