Obverse description Central plain cross with slightly splayed arms occupying the majority of the field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The four cantons between the cross arms contain letters or pellets typical of Carolingian denier design. A circular Latin legend reading LODOICVS, invoking the royal name of Louis, surrounds the inner circle, introduced by a cross pattée. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, as characteristic of hammered coinage of the period.
