The invocation of Louis I — almost certainly Carolingian in spirit if not in direct dynastic right — on coinage struck at Antwerp during the early eleventh century reflects a broader phenomenon in post-Carolingian Europe: regional lords and ecclesiastical authorities perpetuating the names of long-dead Frankish rulers to claim legitimacy they could not otherwise assert. The Duchy of Lower Lotharingia was itself a contested creation, carved from the old Middle Frankish kingdom after the 843 Treaty of Verdun and never quite stable in its overlordships throughout this period.
Antwerp's mint activity in this window is sparsely documented, and the precise issuing authority behind these deniers remains a matter of ongoing scholarly dispute.
