Denier immobilized in the name of Centule

The deniers of Béarn were struck under the viscounts of the Montcade dynasty, frozen in the name of Centule — almost certainly Centule V, who died in 1058 — long after his actual reign. This practice of immobilization, fixing a name and type across successive rulers, was a deliberate political move: it obscured accountability for debasement while preserving the coin's commercial credibility in regional markets along the Pyrenean foothills. Billon content varied considerably across the emission period, and the Poey d'Avant references spanning two catalog numbers reflect recognized die and weight distinctions within what appears to be a single continuous type.
