| Beschrijving keerzijde | Central design displays a plain Greek cross with equal arms, occupying the full inner field and dividing it into four quadrants. The cross is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, beyond which the circumferential legend ✠ CΛRTIS CIVITΛS is inscribed in capital Latin letters, identifying the city of Chartres as the place of issue. The execution is characteristic of 10th-century feudal deniers, with slightly irregular letter spacing and a somewhat crude though legible strike. The flan edges are uneven, consistent with hand-cut planchets of the period. This reverse type follows the standard Carolingian cross-and-legend formula common to contemporary French feudal coinage. |
