| Obverse description | Central field features a stylized royal monogram or cross-like device enclosed within a plain inner circle, typical of Carolingian-derived feudal coinage. The surrounding legend in capital Latin characters reads ✠ CRΛTIΛ DI REX, invoking the divine grace of King Ralph (Raoul of Burgundy, king of West Francia). The lettering is rendered in the angular, somewhat rustic epigraphic style characteristic of mid-tenth-century hammered billon deniers. The coin exhibits an irregular flan with uneven strike, consistent with hand-hammered production of the period. The overall design faithfully perpetuates the Carolingian royal denier prototype in an immobilized feudal imitation. |
