Denier - Iacobus II

Jaume II ruled Aragon from 1291 but spent the first years of his reign embroiled in the War of the Sicilian Vespers, a conflict he inherited along with the crown. The Treaty of Anagni in 1295 required him to surrender Sicily to the papacy in exchange for recognition and the promise of Sardinia — a trade his Sicilian subjects found unforgivable and his Aragonese treasury found barely adequate. These small billon pieces circulated through that period of persistent military expenditure and diplomatic maneuvering across the western Mediterranean.
