Hugh XII ruled Angoulême during a period when the Capetian crown was systematically absorbing southern French counties, and his coinage reflects the stubborn persistence of local minting rights even as royal денье parisis increasingly displaced regional issues in everyday commerce. He died in 1270 on the Eighth Crusade alongside Louis IX, cutting his reign — and his minting activity — short.
