The face is depicted with stylized curling locks or scrollwork flanking either side of the chin, and a crown surmounting the head. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading: ☩ VGO DVX BVRG ⋮ DIE, identifying the issuer as Hugh, Duke of Burgundy. The overall design reflects the primitive but distinctive engraving conventions common to feudal billon deniers of 12th–13th century France. |
