Obverse description Central field displays a plain cross pattée with a small annulet at the centre, each quadrant containing a pellet or annulet ornament, all enclosed within a plain inner circle. The surrounding legend reads + MONETA HVGONIS in Roman capitals, separated from the inner circle by a plain field. The strike is characteristic of medieval hammered coinage, with an irregularly shaped flan and slightly uneven relief typical of 12th-century Burgundian issues.

Reverse description Central field bears a stylised representation of a church or fortified gate — a tall architectural element flanked by two towers, rendered in a schematic manner consistent with Romanesque monetary iconography — enclosed within a plain inner circle. A cross or star motif appears to the right of the central device. The outer legend reads + CABVEO CIVITAS in Roman capitals, denoting the city of Chalon-sur-Saône, on an irregularly shaped hammered flan with variable relief.
