Hermann of Salm was elected anti-king in August 1081 by the Saxon opposition to Henry IV, whose excommunication by Gregory VII had fractured imperial authority. His reign was militarily precarious from the start — he never controlled Goslar securely for long, and the mint's output under his name reflects an authority more claimed than exercised. He was killed in September 1088 during the siege of Cochem.
Coins struck in his name at Goslar are rare precisely because his hold on the Harz region was intermittent, contested, and brief.
