Obverse description A plain cross at centre, enclosed within an inner beaded circle (grenetis). The episcopal legend of Bishop Hermann of Metz runs around the periphery between the inner grenetis and an outer beaded border, reading +HERIMANN` EP^S. The overall design is typical of Ottonian-era ecclesiastical coinage, with crudely struck but legible elements characteristic of hammered medieval deniers.
