Obverse description Facing bust of the Virgin Mary rendered in a schematic Romanesque style, with a crowned or veiled head and stylized facial features including dotted eyes and a pronounced chin. The effigy is depicted frontally in high relief, with traces of a partially legible Latin legend surrounding the bust in the field. The crude but expressive die-work is characteristic of mid-eleventh-century episcopal coinage from the Upper Rhine region.
