Henry V's reign was defined almost entirely by the Investiture Controversy — the decades-long struggle between the papacy and the empire over the right to appoint bishops and abbots. Henry had deposed his own father, Henry IV, in 1105 partly by exploiting that conflict, then found himself locked in the same fight. The settlement, the Concordat of Worms in 1122, came only three years before his death.
The Hammerstein mint on the Rhine operated under close imperial oversight during this period. Output from it is sparse in surviving collections, and Kluge Kar#216 represents one of the more elusive attributions in the German medieval series.
