Henry of Guelders, prince-bishop of Liège from 1247, was among the most belligerent and politically reckless of the medieval prince-bishops — eventually deposed by papal order in 1274 for conduct ranging from simony to appearing in battle in full armor. The Huy mint was one of several minting rights exercised across the prince-bishopric, with the Perron designation referencing Huy's civic monument, a symbol of the city's liberties granted by the bishop. That a coinage should invoke it reflects the careful negotiation between episcopal authority and urban privilege that defined minting arrangements throughout the Meuse valley in this period.
