Henry III ruled the empire at its near-maximum medieval extent, and his Regensburg issues reflect the city's dual status: both an imperial mint and a major Danubian trading hub. Regensburg had been producing coinage continuously since the Carolingian period, and by Henry's reign the mint was operating under tight royal oversight rather than episcopal or abbatial control — a distinction not universal in mid-eleventh century German minting practice.
