Henry III ruled the empire at its territorial apex, and his deniers from Nabburg reflect the decentralized minting system that characterized mid-eleventh century imperial coinage — local bishops and counts held striking rights under royal grant, producing issues that varied considerably in weight and fineness even within a single reign. Nabburg, in the Upper Palatinate, was a royal residence of some importance to Henry, who held court there on multiple occasions.
