Aversbeschreibung Crowned, bearded effigy of Emperor Henry III facing right, rendered in the bold, schematic style characteristic of Ottonian-Salian coinage. The crown is depicted with a frontal band surmounted by a central cross finial, and the beard is indicated by a series of incuse lines beneath the chin. The bust is shown in high relief against an unadorned field, with the partial Latin legend HEINRI IMR (Henricus Imperator) partially visible around the periphery. The die-cutting reflects the vigorous but simplified artistry of the mid-eleventh-century Regensburg workshop.

Reversbeschreibung A stylized columned temple or church facade with a prominent pointed gabled roof is depicted in the center of the field, the architectural structure supported by multiple pillars rendered schematically. Atop the apex of the roof sits a globus or pommel surmounted by a cross, symbolizing imperial and ecclesiastical authority. An arcade with three arches is visible at the base of the structure, consistent with depictions of the Regensburg cathedral or a generic palatial building type used on contemporary Bavarian deniers. The partial circular legend RADASPON C (Radaspona Civitas, City of Regensburg) runs around the periphery, partially legible on this specimen.

Zusätzliche Informationen

Henry III's reign marked the apex of Salian imperial authority over the German church — it was he who deposed three rival popes in 1046 at the Synod of Sutri and personally appointed their successors, a degree of papal control no German emperor before or after him fully replicated. Regensburg was among the most productive minting centers of the period, benefiting from its position on the Danube trade routes and its status as a favored imperial residence.

Kluge Kar#153 places this firmly within the imperial coinage reorganized after Henry's coronation in 1046.
