Henry II, Duke of Bavaria — later Holy Roman Emperor Henry II — had his title stripped and was exiled twice before regaining the duchy in 985, the opening year of this issue's production window. These deniers were struck during a politically unstable interregnum in which control of Bavaria changed hands repeatedly, lending the entire sequence a degree of documentary uncertainty that persists in the numismatic literature. Hahn's classification of this type reflects ongoing scholarly revision of South German coinage from the Ottonian period.
