Denier - Henry I

Henry I of Bavaria — son of Heinrich the Quarrelsome's rival and himself a duke of considerable ambition — ruled during the precise years when Ottonian royal authority was pressing hardest against regional ducal power. These deniers were struck in the brief window between his assumption of the duchy and his death in 955, the same year Otto I crushed the Magyars at the Lechfeld, a battle in which Bavarian contingents played a central role.

Hahn's Regensburg attribution places production almost certainly at the ducal mint there.
