The monogram, derived from the Carolingian royal cipher, has become heavily stylised and abstracted through successive restrikes, rendering the individual letterforms largely illegible. Wedge-shaped and triangular ornaments fill the outer field between the beaded circle and the coin's edge. The surrounding legend in Latin completes the design in the typical fashion of early Capetian royal deniers. |
