Giselmar served as Archbishop of Magdeburg from 981 to 1004, a period when the archbishopric held significant minting rights granted under the Ottonian emperors. Magdeburg was one of the easternmost outposts of the Reich's ecclesiastical coinage network, positioned at the frontier of Christianization into Slavic territories — its mint output carried political as much as commercial weight.
Mehl Magd#28 is among the rarer documented varieties in the Magdeburg denier sequence, with relatively few confirmed specimens.
