Géza II ruled during one of medieval Hungary's most internationally entangled reigns — simultaneously fending off Byzantine pressure under Manuel I Komnenos, who invaded repeatedly from the south, while maintaining uneasy relations with the Holy Roman Empire to the west. Hungarian royal deniers of this period functioned partly as instruments of tribute and gift exchange in these diplomatic negotiations, not merely as domestic trade currency. The extremely low weight of this issue reflects a broader debasement trend across mid-twelfth century Hungarian coinage that accelerated under Géza's successors.
