Géza II's reign coincided with sustained pressure from Byzantine Emperor Manuel I Komnenos, who backed rival claimants to the Hungarian throne throughout the 1150s and briefly occupied parts of the kingdom. Royal revenues were strained by repeated military campaigns on multiple fronts simultaneously, which almost certainly influenced the progressive debasement visible across the denier series of this period. The ÉH#54 classification places this piece within a tightly defined group distinguished by minor die variations that specialists use to sequence the issues chronologically within the reign.
