Georges de Saluces held the see of Lausanne under perpetual friction with the Duke of Savoy, whose territorial ambitions repeatedly encroached on episcopal prerogatives throughout the mid-fifteenth century. The bishop's coinage rights were among the few instruments of independent authority he could exercise, which makes issues from his reign administratively significant beyond their modest billon content. He was ultimately deposed in 1461 following Savoyard pressure on Rome.
