| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse presents a schematic figural composition within a plain inner circle, depicting two standing figures rendered in a highly stylized, almost abstract manner typical of late 9th-century papal deniers struck at Rome. The surrounding legend, punctuated by a cross, reads RO MA and VVIDO IP, identifying the mint city of Rome and Emperor Guy (Guido/Wido) of Spoleto with the imperial title. The lettering is in Carolingian majuscule of crude workmanship, consistent with the limited die-cutting capabilities of the Roman mint at this period. The coin reflects the unique joint coinage struck to acknowledge both papal and imperial authority following Guy of Spoleto's coronation as Holy Roman Emperor in 891. |
