Reverse description A bold plain cross pattée dominates the reverse field, extending nearly to the beaded inner circle and dividing the design into four equal quarters. Each quarter is plain, giving the reverse a stark, unadorned character consistent with Plantagenet feudal coinage of the mid-14th century. The peripheral legend DVX AQITAnIE, in uncial Latin lettering, proclaims Edward's title as Duke of Aquitaine and runs between the beaded inner circle and the irregular coin edge. The overall style reflects the simple, functional aesthetic of hammered billon deniers struck under English authority in Gascony.
