Eberhard II served as Archbishop of Salzburg from 1200 to 1246, one of the longest episcopates of any medieval German prelate, and proved a skilled political operator who navigated the brutal conflict between Emperor Frederick II and the papacy — switching allegiances more than once. The Friesach mint in Carinthia had been producing these thin bracteate-style deniers since the mid-twelfth century, and under Eberhard it became a dominant monetary force across the eastern Alpine trade routes, with imitations struck as far away as Slavonia and Hungary.
The CNA Ca 19 type sits within a large and heavily imitated series; distinguishing authentic Salzburg strikes from contemporary copies requires close attention to die workmanship and silver fineness.
