Friesach, in Carinthia, operated as one of the most productive minting centers in the German-speaking lands during the high medieval period, and Salzburg's archbishops used it aggressively to project economic authority across the eastern Alpine trade routes. The so-called Friesacher Pfennig — of which this denier is a specimen — became a de facto regional currency circulating as far as Hungary, Bohemia, and the Adriatic coast, frequently referenced by name in contemporaneous merchant contracts and ecclesiastical accounts.
Eberhard II held the archbishopric from 1200 to 1246, a tenure defined in part by persistent conflict with the Babenberg dukes over jurisdictional and economic rights in precisely the territories where these coins circulated most heavily.
