| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central field occupied by a large Gothic capital F surmounted by a royal crown, the letter boldly rendered in the hammered style typical of early sixteenth-century Provencal billon coinage. The crowned F serves as the monogram of King Francis I of France, asserting royal authority over the County of Provence. A circular Latin legend runs along the periphery within a beaded border, partially visible on this worn specimen. The overall design is simple and hieratic, characteristic of the denier coronat denomination issued for Provence. |
