Reverse description A bold cross pattée with splayed, slightly concave terminals occupies the central field, contained within a beaded inner circle. The cross is rendered in the flat, forceful style typical of Carolingian-tradition hammered deniers of the mid-twelfth century. The surrounding marginal legend, inscribed in uncial characters, references the Frankish royal authority of Conrad as king, a formulaic invocation retained by Genoa from earlier imperial coinage practice.
Reverse script Latin (uncial)
Reverse lettering CVNRAD1 REX
(Translation: Conrad King)
