Additional information

Charles III — "the Simple" — received Lotharingia in 911 following the death of Louis the Child, the last Carolingian king of East Francia, ending decades of disputed control over the region between the West and East Frankish crowns. The Verdun mint was among the most active in Lotharingia during his reign, its output reflecting the strategic importance of the Meuse valley as a commercial and political corridor. Charles lost Lotharingia entirely in 920 when local magnates transferred their allegiance to Henry the Fowler of Saxony, effectively compressing the window for this coinage to a narrower span than the nominal reign dates suggest.
