Obverse description Carolingian royal monogram of Charles occupying the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The monogram is composed of interlaced letters in the Carolingian tradition, boldly rendered in high relief characteristic of hammered coinage. A Latin legend reading IMPERATOR AVG (Carolus Imperator Augustus) encircles the monogram in the outer field, beginning with a cross pattée. The flan is irregular in outline, as typical of ninth-century hammered deniers.
