Obverse description The central field bears the Carolingian imperial monogram of Charles III, formed by interlaced letters arranged around a central vertical shaft in high relief, executed in the characteristic Carolingian manner. The monogram is contained within a beaded inner circle. A peripheral legend in capital letters reads IMPERATOR AGVST, introduced by a cross pattée, proclaiming the issuer as Emperor Augustus.
