Obverse description Central field occupied by the Carolingian royal monogram of Charles, composed of interlaced letters within a beaded inner circle. The monogram is rendered in the characteristic Carolingian style, with the letters K, A, R, L, and S interwoven into a single device. A circular beaded border separates the central device from the outer legend, which reads INPERΛTOR ΛCVSTVS, proclaiming Charles as Emperor Augustus. The coin is struck on an irregular flan typical of ninth-century Carolingian hammered coinage.
