Reverse description The reverse presents a three-line mint inscription arranged horizontally across the field, a standard device on Carolingian deniers to denote the place of striking. The upper line reads S, the middle line COLONIA, and the lower line A, together rendering COLONIA — the Latin name for Cologne. The lettering is bold and slightly irregular, struck with the characteristic unevenness of ninth- and tenth-century hammered coinage. A partial beaded border is visible around the circumference of the flan.
