| Obverse description | Central Carolingian royal monogram of Karolus, rendered in interlaced letters within a beaded inner circle. The monogram is composed of the letters C, A, R, L, and V arranged in the characteristic cross-shaped Carolingian cipher. A Latin circular legend reading CRATIA D-I REX surrounds the beaded circle, proclaiming Charles as king by the grace of God. The design is executed in the bold, slightly irregular relief typical of ninth-century Carolingian hammered coinage. |
