Obverse description Central Carolingian royal monogram of Charles (Karolus), composed of interlaced letters within a beaded inner circle. The monogram is rendered in the characteristic angular Carolingian style, with a cross pattée incorporated at left and geometric interlace filling the field. A circular legend reading GRATIA D I REX ('Charles, king by the grace of God') surrounds the beaded circle, written in Latin majuscules typical of the Edict of Pîtres coinage reform of 864.
