| Opschrift voorzijde | ✠ GRΛTIΛ D-I REX (Translation: Charles, king by the grace of god.) |
| Beschrijving keerzijde | Central field bears a plain Latin cross with flared or expanded terminals, standing on a short base, occupying the majority of the flan. The cross is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, which in turn is surrounded by the mint legend disposed around the full circumference of the coin. The legend, introduced by a cross pattée, identifies the issuing city of Tours (Turones Civitas) in the Carolingian realm. The lettering is in the angular uncial style characteristic of ninth-century Frankish mint production, and the overall composition follows the standard reverse type of Charles the Bald's reformed coinage as established by the Edict of Pîtres (864). |
