| Obverse description | Central field occupied by a plain Latin cross with splayed arms, set within a beaded inner circle. The annular zone between the inner circle and the outer border is populated by a series of small crosses and crescent-like ornaments arranged alternately around the circumference, lending the type its characteristic decorative appearance. The outer rim is defined by an irregular raised border consistent with hand-struck hammered coinage. The circumferential legend, introduced by a cross pattée, reads CARLVS REX, identifying the issuer as King Charles II (the Bald) of West Francia. |
