Obverse description Central field bears the interlaced Carolingian royal monogram of Charles (KAROLUS), composed of four intertwined letters rendered in relief, enclosed within a plain beaded inner circle. The monogram is executed in the characteristic Carolingian style, with boldly modelled interlacing strokes. A circular Latin legend surrounds the inner circle, reading clockwise from a cross pattée at the left, separated from the monogram by the beaded border. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, as is typical of ninth-century hammered Frankish deniers.
