Obverse description Central field dominated by a Carolingian monogram for KAROLUS, formed by interlaced letters within an inner beaded circle. The monogram is executed in the bold, angular hand characteristic of ninth-century Frankish hammered coinage. Surrounding the inner beaded border, the circular legend reads GRATIA D-I REX (Charles, king by the grace of God), introduced by a cross pattée. The lettering is rendered in large, slightly irregular capitals typical of the Sens workshop, distributed around the full circumference of the flan.
