Obverse description Central field features a plain cross with a pellet in each of the four quarters, all enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend, reading clockwise in Latin capital letters, gives the royal title of Charles II. The lettering is rendered in the angular Carolingian epigraphic style typical of ninth-century Frankish coinage, with a cross pattée serving as the initial mark before the legend. The coin's flan is irregular in shape, as characteristic of hand-hammered early medieval deniers.
