Obverse description Central field occupied by the Carolingian royal monogram of Charles II (the Bald), formed by the interlaced letters C, A, R, L, and V, executed in the characteristic Carolingian style. The monogram is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. A Latin legend in majuscule characters runs around the periphery between the beaded circle and the outer rope-like border, invoking the king's title by divine grace.
