Obverse description Central field features a Carolingian royal monogram composed of interlaced letters forming the name KAROLVS, enclosed within a plain inner circle. The monogram is rendered in bold relief in the typical Carolingian style, with letters arranged in a cruciform interlace pattern. Surrounding the inner circle, a beaded or pellet border separates the central device from the outer legend. The circular Latin legend reads GRATIA D-I REX, proclaiming Charles as king by the grace of God, introduced by a cross pattee. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, characteristic of ninth-century Carolingian hammered coinage.
