| Beschrijving voorzijde | Carolingian royal monogram of Charles II (the Bald) occupying the central field, rendered in interlaced letterforms typical of ninth-century Frankish coinage. The monogram is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, itself surrounded by a circular Latin legend reading CRATIA D I REX, invoking the king's divine authority. The die-work is characteristic of the hammered denier tradition, with the lettering disposed evenly around the circumference.
