Obverse description Central field bears the Karolus monogram — an interlaced Carolingian cipher composed of the letters of KAROLUS — enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding outer legend, separated by a second beaded border, reads GRATIA D-I REX, identifying Charles as king by the grace of God, and is introduced by a cross pattée. The monogram is rendered in the characteristic Carolingian style, with letters intertwined in a compact, architecturally structured design typical of the Temple-type deniers issued under Charles II the Bald.
