| Reverse description | Within a beaded inner circle, a bold plain cross with equal arms occupies the central field, its lower limb notably elongated, dividing the interior into four quadrants typical of Carolingian denier coinage. The cross is rendered in strong raised relief against a flat field. The surrounding peripheral legend, separated from the inner circle by a beaded border, reads the mint name in Latin majuscules, identifying the Melun (Castellum Meledunum) mint. The overall design is crisp and well-struck relative to the flan, which displays the characteristic irregular outline of ninth-century hammered silver. |
