Charles II — "the Bald" — inherited West Francia from the 843 Treaty of Verdun, which fractured Charlemagne's empire among three grandsons after years of dynastic civil war. The Melle mint was among the most productive in his kingdom, sitting atop the silver-bearing ores of the Poitou region that supplied much of Carolingian coinage. Melle's output during this reign was substantial enough to appear in Viking hoards from Scandinavia to the British Isles, carried there by raid and tribute alike.
